What are the risks to the autonomy of the independent nonprofit sector not to mention our democracy when a growing amount of philanthropic power is held in fewer hands? When we published our first edition of Gilded Giving in 2016, charitable revenue in the United States was already growing at a remarkable pace. As of 2018, total U.S. giving has been on a strong upward trajectory for nine years, ever since the economy emerged from the 2007-2009 recession.
