SCORE is a more than 40 year old non-profi t with over 10,500 volunteers who provide free business counseling and no or low-cost workshops to new and emerging small businesses nation wide. In 2005, SCORE counselors volunteered over 1,000,000 hours in counseling and workshop services. While most of SCORE’s work has focused on small businesses, over the years it has assisted some startup and emerging non-profi t organizations, particularly on business issues. As a result of these experiences, SCORE strongly believes that to be effective, competitive and sustainable, non-profi ts must not only be caring and creative, they must run their operations as businesses.

The nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. Studies show the percentage of people of color in the executive director/CEO role has remained under 20% for the last 15 years1 even as the country becomes more diverse. To understand the causes of this disparity, the Building Movement Project conducted the Nonprofits, Leadership, and Race survey with over 4,000 respondents. The study found few differences between white and people of color (POC) respondents in their aspirations or preparation for leadership roles—in fact people of color are more likely to be interested in becoming a nonprofit leader than whites. Survey respondents identified Boards of Directors and executive recruiters as key barriers to the hiring of more people of color executive directors/CEOs.

We saw a leveling off in email incidents such as spam and spear phishing, probably related to the use of more tools to protect email. Successful malware attacks declined significantly; whether from protective tools or from a shift in the attack landscape remains to be seen. However, our report shows the blanket risk of cyber fraud attacks on our sector, as in the for-profit and government sectors, is unabated and rising.
