How to Talk with Donors about Planned Gifts

Planned gifts have often been thought of as the private purview of credentialed development, legal, and financial professionals. With terms like “present value methodology,” “four-tier system of taxation,” and “current IRS-mandated discount rate,” it’s no wonder why many of us feel this way and hesitate to enter into discussions about planned gifts. Studies and talks with donors, however, remind us that the tax benefits of making planned gifts are not the primary reason they are made. Donors want to make a difference in the world they live in, both now and in the future. Successful planned giving programs start with simple messaging and evolve into life-long relationships with constituents. Start your planned giving program today by throwing out the law school admissions form on your desk and learn to talk with donors about their dreams and wishes for your organization!

Connected Philanthropy

whitePaper | December 21, 2021

We live in a world that is changing both rapidly and dramatically. Climate change threatens hundreds of millions. Policy changes have reduced or eliminated many of the benefits in healthcare, education, and other areas. Mass migration overwhelms the availability of resources needed as a result of the influx of new immigrants. The public sector can’t keep up, which means that philanthropy needs to work harder than ever to fill the gaps and improve people’s lives. At the same time, philanthropy has a new generation of mega-donors, many of whom come from the tech sector and find the established processes in funding dated and limiting: they lack capacity, visibility, and the ability to collaborate widely. The rapid growth in donors and money flowing through the system, coupled with the increasing demand for nonprofits to meet needs locally and globally, make it harder for all of us to quickly and efficiently connect funders to the boots on the ground.

Race to Lead: Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap

whitePaper | February 21, 2020

The nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. Studies show the percentage of people of color in the executive director/CEO role has remained under 20% for the last 15 years1 even as the country becomes more diverse. To understand the causes of this disparity, the Building Movement Project conducted the Nonprofits, Leadership, and Race survey with over 4,000 respondents. The study found few differences between white and people of color (POC) respondents in their aspirations or preparation for leadership roles—in fact people of color are more likely to be interested in becoming a nonprofit leader than whites. Survey respondents identified Boards of Directors and executive recruiters as key barriers to the hiring of more people of color executive directors/CEOs.
