Gifts-in-Kind Donations: How they can be used to deceive

Gifts-in-kind (GIK) are noncash donations made to a charity. Common examples of GIK are food, clothing, prescription drugs, equipment, and medical supplies. Individuals and businesses donate products to charities, which in turn give the products directly to those in need, or to other charities for redistribution. Certain types of charities, such as thrift stores and international relief organizations, may receive significant amounts of GIK.

Partnering with foundations, nonprofits and individuals, ABFE provides its members with professional development and technical assistance resources that further the philanthropic sector’s connection and responsiveness to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion. Established in 1971 as the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the organization was credited with many of philanthropy’s early gains in diversity. It since has evolved into an influential network. In 2013, the organization shed its descriptor and adopted the simpler ABFE (ab-fee) to better reflect its broadening membership.
