The Growing Importance of Charity Websites to Philanthropy

November 4, 2013

The first, and most important, question to answer is just how many donors have given online. In October 2011, 61% of donors reported giving online, and in April 2012, 63% reported the same behaviour. Giving through a charity website is slightly lower some donors have given through shared sites, crowd funding, etc.

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO)

The GEO community makes the difference between grantmaking as usual and transformational change. We’re more than 6,000 grantmakers working together to turn a hunger for more effective philanthropy into clear pathways for achieving it. We’re cutting through the noise to lift up the practices that matter most to nonprofits. The GEO community gives grantmakers the opportunity to work with others navigating the same journey to improve. With conferences focused on solving of-the-moment challenges, regular opportunities for peer learning, and publications that lift up best practice and examples from peers, GEO speeds grantmakers’ progress on the road to effectiveness. Four out of five GEO members outpace the field in adopting smarter grantmaking practices. To learn more about how GEO is making faster progress possible, visit www.geofunders.org.

Closing the Deal Moving Your Fundraising Forward

whitePaper | March 30, 2020

Like the rate of failure seen in new business ventures, nonprofits often fail because they cannot secure the funding to be sustainable. This is because many nonprofits focus on their outputs rather than outcomes. Fundraising strategies should emphasize the value of the result expected to be delivered, then emphasize the downstream impact (outcomes) not just focus on the activities (or outputs) of the nonprofit itself.

Corporate Foundations & Grantmaking Toolkit

whitePaper | July 30, 2021

Nearly all companies engage in corporate philanthropy as a means of giving back to the communities in which they operate. This includes financial contributions, product donations, in-kind services, and employee matching and volunteering. Technically, a corporate foundation is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a type of 501(c)(3) public charity called a “private non-operating foundation.” The Internal Revenue Code does not distinguish corporate foundations from family foundations. Both are subject to the same regulations. From a practical stand point, however, there are differences in funding and governance. A corporate foundation is funded by a company, instead of an individual or family. And the board members of a corporate foundation are typically company executives. However, only a fraction of these companies take advantage of the additional benefits that come from adding a corporate foundation to their philanthropic efforts. This toolkit will help you understand the benefits of a corporate foundation and provide an overview of the operational requirements.
