NGOs Shifting Power to Local Staff to Boost Program Results
With the aim of delivering better program results, several prominent international aid organizations have changed their organizational structure to distribute more power to local staff, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reports.
In 2017, Pathfinder International, a reproductive health NGO that works in nineteen countries, replaced its top-down structure - a U.S. headquarters overseeing field offices in Africa, Asia, and South America - with a non-hierarchical one that puts every office on equal footing and better positions non-U.S. staff to take a leadership role in shaping the organization's agenda. As part of the effort, Pathfinder named a new chief of programs and impact, Mohamed Abou Nar, who is based at the organization's Cairo office and plans to deploy flexible teams comprising employees from different offices to work on specific projects.

The Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia (YCF) has awarded more than $40,000 in grant money to 19 non-profits that are having greater demands during the COVID-19 outbreak. Patty Showers Ryan, YCF’s president, said the money was donated by community members, businesses and corporations alike who see the demand in the community and wanted to do their part to help. Ryan explained that all of the donations go to the agencies and that the awarding of grants will not be a one time deal. “We have a cycle set up that we’re going to make grant awards every other week for as long as this emergency continues and I suspect — we’re seeing a lot of need for food pantries and shelter,” Ryan said. “We’re hearing more that there may be some needs for domestic violence types of victims that may have dealt with domestic violence.”

Kroger donates over $40,000 to W.Va. food banks

Last week, Kroger Mid-Atlantic donated $41,000 in product and cash donations to two prominent West Virginia food banks — Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway and Facing Hunger Foodbank in Huntington. Mountaineer Food Bank received a $10,000 cash donation and nine pallets of peanut butter, consisting of 10,300 individual jars and valued at nearly $11,000. Facing Hunger Foodbank received a $20,000 donation, which will be used to aid its senior feeding program. The donations come during a time of extraordinary demand across the state as a result of situations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re inspired by the work of Mountaineer Food Bank and Facing Hunger Foodbank, and we are doing our best to bring critically needed food and resources to those who are struggling with hunger at this time,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic, in a news release. “Our food bank partners need us now more than ever, and we will continue to look for solutions to support them.”

Spoetzl Brewery, the brewer of Texas' own Shiner Bock, is donating $500,000 to a relief fund aimed at helping the state's restaurants and their employees. According to the brewery, the donation to the Texas Restaurant Association is meant to provide financial relief to Texas' independent restaurateurs with funds designed to safeguard employee jobs. The Texas Restaurant Relief Fund initiative was established by the Texas Restaurant Association Education Foundation, the nonprofit workforce development arm of the Texas Restaurant Association.
