New York Community Trust Awards $8.3 Million in Grants

The New York Community Trust has announced fifty-two grants totaling $8.3 million in support of New York City organizations working in the areas of aging services, behavioral health, LGBTQ issues, education, immigrant rights, human services, workforce and youth development, arts and culture, community improvement/development, and the environment. Recipients include the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged and New York University College of Nursing, each of which was awarded $100,000 to expand and enhance a peer-education health program for older adults in the Bronx; the Legal Action Center, which will receive $150,000 in support of its efforts to ensure that New Yorkers, especially those who are court-involved, get substance-abuse treatment in the wake of federal changes to health care; the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, which was awarded $150,000 to study the barriers faced by transgender individuals in seeking employment or staying employed; New York University, which will receive $1.25 million to expand an early reading program to all PK-2 classes in Community School District 7 in the Bronx; and the Immigrant Defense Project, which was awarded $80,000 in support of its efforts to protect the rights of immigrants threatened with detention and/or deportation.
