Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a nonprofit health plan based in Michigan, and CareSource, a nonprofit and managed care health plan based in Ohio with members in seven states, recently announced a joint venture to develop new opportunities to serve Michigan residents better. HAP and CareSource will collaborate to provide broader, higher-quality healthcare coverage to more state residents through a joint Medicaid offering and a planned re-entry into the Health Insurance Marketplace.
HAP, one of the most reputable names in Michigan health insurance, offers Medicaid coverage to 43,000 HAP Empowered members throughout Michigan, in addition to Medicare Advantage and commercial plans. CareSource, one of the nation's largest managed Medicaid nonprofits, provides Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, and Medicare products to over 2 million members in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and West Virginia.
The CEOs of both companies recognized the excellent cultural fit between them. HAP is well-known in Michigan for its community engagement programs, such as its ongoing collaboration with the Detroit Public School Community District and its longstanding role as the primary sponsor of the HAP Crim Festival of Races in Flint. Its community investment focuses on enhancing social determinants of health, namely homelessness, food insecurity, and physical activity. With its people-first philosophy, CareSource is acknowledged for its extensive community engagement across markets to enhance health outcomes for low-income populations, awarding millions of dollars in grants yearly to local organizations and an award-winning prescriber outreach program to reduce opioid prescriptions.
HAP and CareSource are finalizing their agreement, which state and federal regulators will thoroughly review. The companies will keep working through operational details and look for future possibilities to provide Michigan residents with the best healthcare coverage.
