Facebook, Nonprofit Bring High-Speed Internet to Rural North Carolina

COMMUNITY COLLEGES, charter schools, government offices and other institutions in rural areas of Western North Carolina are expected to gain high-speed internet access thanks to a collaboration between Facebook and a local nonprofit organization. MCNC, a technology nonprofit that operates a broadband network that connects 750 of the state's institutions, announced Tuesday that it is working with Facebook to bring high-speed internet to five North Carolina counties: Rutherford, Burke, Caldwelll, Wilkes and Surry. According to MCNC, Facebook is constructing a new fiber route that is expected to be completed this year.
