$120K for emergency food, shelter available to region nonprofits

The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut over the next few weeks will accept applications from New London County nonprofit organizations for emergency food and shelter funding. About $120,000 is available to nonprofits in the region to supplement existing programs, according to a news release from the United Way. The funds, part of the national Emergency Food and Shelter Program created in 1983, are made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funding in 2018 helped provide more than 34,000 meals, 1,000 shelter bed nights, 130 households with rental assistance and 60 households with utility assistance throughout New London County. Organizations must apply to the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut by Friday, May 17, at 1 p.m. The application and other instructions are available at uwsect.org.
