Leveraging funds provided in part by MacKenzie Scott's transformational donation, Habitat for Humanity International is launching a new initiative to address the racial homeownership gap—which now stands at nearly 30 percent, the widest it has been in more than 40 years.
Habitat's Advancing Black Homeownership initiative deepens our commitment to increase homeownership opportunities for Black individuals and families—and address the racial and systemic bias that has stymied access to homeownership for generations—through programs that will help end the social and economic disparity many Black people and communities of color continue to face.
Habitat is initially investing more than $25 million over the next three to five years—with a goal of raising $100 million or more—to develop and launch a slate of new programs, including an equitable commercial lending strategy and property acquisition fund through Habitat Mortgage Solutions, our community development financial institution.
"These efforts are designed to help Black families build intergenerational wealth through homeownership and other strategic supports, such as developing more inclusive communities, increasing the availability of affordable homes near public transportation and jobs, and transforming concentrated areas of poverty into areas of opportunity," said Adrienne Goolsby, senior vice president of the U.S. and Canada for Habitat for Humanity International. "Ultimately, we want to reduce the impact a century of discriminatory housing policies has had on the Black community."
Other initiative programs include financial coaching and counseling to help Habitat affiliates address the needs of applicants along their homeownership journey; a national Black homeowner advisory group to help Habitat for Humanity International develop strategies and implement programs to help increase Black homeownership; expanded advocacy outreach through the Cost of Home campaign; and collaborative efforts with affordable housing partners. Funding opportunities will also be made available to Habitat affiliates doing innovative work to help increase Black homeownership.

UHSM Health Share, a faith-based health care nonprofit founded on Christian beliefs and values, announced its ambassador athlete Grant Lottering, extreme endurance cyclist, international motivational speaker and Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, will attempt his first ‘Im’possible Tour’ in the US, starting 1 June in Shaver Lake, Sierra National Forest.
Lottering will embark on a 700-mile non-stop continuous cycle from Shaver Lake to Irvine, Orange County in the fastest time possible, climbing an agonizing 63,000ft in one ride, to raise awareness and support for the Laureus Sport for Good Charity, which uses sports as a powerful tool to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantages.

Lottering suffered a horrendous cycling accident during a world championship preparation race In the Italian Alps in 2013 and was declared medically dead on the scene. He suffered 22 fractured bones and extensive internal injuries and bleeding. He miraculously survived and resolved to make a difference with his second chance at life he believes God gave him. Since then, and despite undergoing 12 surgeries since 2013, plus emergency cancer surgery, he has astonished the medical profession and audiences alike with his annual extreme cycling attempts for charity dubbed The Im’possible Tour. Lottering’s remarkable story and life journey has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for underprivileged children across the world and has reached over 90 million people globally as he continues to inspire and challenge audiences to be resilient and persevere in the face of adversity.
His first-ever US Im’possible Tour, sponsored by UHSM and Mercedes-Benz Vans USA, will see Lottering ride from Shaver Lake in the Sierra National Forest, through the Sequoia National Forest, down to Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties, covering most of the famous mountain roads along the way including Refugio Road, Gibraltar Road, Crystal Lake and Mt Baldy, before heading down to Irvine in Orange County. A mammoth ride that will see Lottering climbing over 63,000 feet in one continuous ride that should take him three days and three nights of straight riding to complete. The aim will be to finish on Saturday, 4 June at the Orange County Great Park Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California just ahead of the OC Soccer Club match against New Mexico United.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced that $35.6 million was raised for more than 200 non-profit organizations through this year's 126th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 18. The B.A.A. Official Charity Program and the John Hancock Non-Profit Program have combined to raise more than $460 million since the charity program's inception at the 1989 Boston Marathon.
The $35.6 million raised this year includes donations raised through the B.A.A.'s Official Charity Program, the John Hancock Non-Profit Program, and from other qualified and invitational runners. A total of 2,566 participants ran as fundraising athletes at the 126th Boston Marathon. Further details can be found on the Boston Marathon's fundraising page through GivenGain.

Earlier this year, the B.A.A. and John Hancock held the first-ever Boston Marathon Giving Day, which resulted in more than $1.1 million in donations over a 24-hour period to the 200 non-profit programs affiliated with the 126th Boston Marathon. Boston Marathon Giving Day was the second largest single day of donations to non-profits connected to the race, behind 2018 #GivingTuesday.
The B.A.A. annually provides non-profits associated with the B.A.A. Official Charity Program and John Hancock's Non-Profit Program with invitational entries into the Boston Marathon. Each non-profit organization directly manages its own application process, athlete selection, and fundraising minimums, deadlines, and requirements.
The 126th Boston Marathon marked the first Patriots' Day race since 2019 and featured a 98.4% finish rate, with 24,918 athletes from 111 different countries and all 50 states earning their unicorn medals.
