21 & Change, Inc. Appoints 10 Florida Leaders to Advisory Council

21 & Change, Inc. President John Bodor, Officers, and the Board of Directors announced the appointment of 10 Florida leaders to the nonprofit's Advisory Council. The organization champions inclusion, education, and human rights for children and young adults with developmental disabilities in the state of Florida.

The following industry and community leaders were unanimously approved by the 21 & Change Board of Directors at the organization's monthly board meeting on February 10, 2022:

Yani Bodor, Co-founder of 21 & Change and Director of Advocacy said "The collective knowledge of the Advisory Council will provide missing expertise, spur innovation, and will add a necessary level of checks and balances to always ensure our vision, mission and position is true to our objectives. And as a parent of children with developmental disabilities, I can't express my gratitude enough to these individuals who help make our programs a reality by not just educating people but creating bipartisan change on a statewide level."

One of the driving forces and most successful services provided by 21 & Change has been the IEP Advocacy Scholarships. IEP Advocates, also known as Special Education Advocates, assist parents of children with developmental disabilities to obtain special education services and accommodations in their public schools.  Although not attorneys, the advocates help the parents represent the child's legal rights to a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment under the current federal and state laws. This scholarship program benefits parents and their children who could not otherwise afford the professional services of an IEP Advocate. Many of our scholarship recipients are single mothers with limited or no income who have one or more children with developmental disabilities.

Clemens, the Director of Public Affairs at Florida Internet & Television also said, "21 & Change is working with the State of Florida and Florida legislators to push for public policy change that improves the quality of life and education access for students with disabilities. Having partnerships with progress-minded thought leaders, state legislators, and community stakeholders during the current legislative session will benefit policies that address student and individual needs are enacted and upheld."

According to Bodor, last year's legislative priorities for education policy issues included a national-level push for special education funding, and the state-level Students with Disabilities in Public Schools (S.B. 192 & H.B. 149) legislation that prohibited the practice of seclusion, strictly limited physical restraint, and initiated a pilot program for cameras in our Florida ESE classrooms. This successful push resulted in Governor DeSantis signing S.B. 192 / H.B. 149 into law on June 22, 2021.

21 & Change fundraises throughout the year for the "IEP Advocacy Scholarship Program." The goal for 2022 is to increase scholarship awards to 25 or more for Florida families experiencing financial distress to offset, or fully cover their needs. The organization's annual flagship fundraiser, Champions for Change, will take place in downtown Tampa at the Tampa Movement Lab on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Leading Nonprofit Baby2Baby to Provide Much Needed Aid to Address the Baby Formula Shortage in the Pittsburgh Area

Baby2Baby, the national organization that has been at the forefront of providing relief to vulnerable families dealing with the U.S.’ baby formula shortage, announced it will distribute 12,000 cans of formula to the greater Pittsburgh region by the end of this week. Distribution to hospitals, diaper banks, childcare centers and family resource centers across the area began yesterday, and was made possible through a donation from local Pittsburgh resident Thomas Tull and his wife Alba through their philanthropic organization, the Tull Family Foundation. The formula shortage is still an absolute emergency for the families we serve. Our mission at Baby2Baby is to provide families with diapers, formula and other essentials that every child deserves, and that mission has become even more critical during this crisis. It has been horrible for every parent, but even more devastating for families living in poverty who don’t have the luxury of switching to a more expensive brand or access to multiple stores to find anything in stock. We are so grateful to Thomas and Alba Tull, and the Tull Family Foundation, for their extremely generous gift which is enabling us to provide hundreds of thousands of bottles of lifesaving formula to families in need across Pittsburgh." Since the pandemic began, it has delivered more than 300,000 cans. At the start of 2022, even before the recalls, they had requests for over 8.8 million cans. The organization has been using all of the resources at its disposal to support families impacted by the current shortage – including working directly with their wholesale partners to have formula made for a fraction of the retail cost and distributing donations from formula companies that weren’t impacted by the recalls. They have already sent formula to Pennsylvania, California, Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Alabama and South Dakota, and have more on the way to communities in need across the country. Habitat for Humanity International launches initiative to address the Black homeownership gap in the U.S.

Leveraging funds provided in part by MacKenzie Scott's transformational donation, Habitat for Humanity International is launching a new initiative to address the racial homeownership gap—which now stands at nearly 30 percent, the widest it has been in more than 40 years. Habitat's Advancing Black Homeownership initiative deepens our commitment to increase homeownership opportunities for Black individuals and families—and address the racial and systemic bias that has stymied access to homeownership for generations—through programs that will help end the social and economic disparity many Black people and communities of color continue to face. Habitat is initially investing more than $25 million over the next three to five years—with a goal of raising $100 million or more—to develop and launch a slate of new programs, including an equitable commercial lending strategy and property acquisition fund through Habitat Mortgage Solutions, our community development financial institution. "These efforts are designed to help Black families build intergenerational wealth through homeownership and other strategic supports, such as developing more inclusive communities, increasing the availability of affordable homes near public transportation and jobs, and transforming concentrated areas of poverty into areas of opportunity," said Adrienne Goolsby, senior vice president of the U.S. and Canada for Habitat for Humanity International. "Ultimately, we want to reduce the impact a century of discriminatory housing policies has had on the Black community." Other initiative programs include financial coaching and counseling to help Habitat affiliates address the needs of applicants along their homeownership journey; a national Black homeowner advisory group to help Habitat for Humanity International develop strategies and implement programs to help increase Black homeownership; expanded advocacy outreach through the Cost of Home campaign; and collaborative efforts with affordable housing partners. AAA-ICDR Foundation Welcomes Applications for 2023 Grant Cycle

The American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution Foundation® (AAA-ICDR Foundation) has issued a request for proposals from nonprofit and community organizations to receive grants in 2023. The Foundation encourages applications to support projects that meet its areas of focus in next year's grant cycle. The AAA-ICDR Foundation is now accepting grant proposals seeking between $50,000 and $250,000 for programs addressing any of the 2023 grant cycle's priorities: Bridge Community Conflict with a focus on civil discourse seeking to mend societal divisions. Prevent and Reduce Violence with a focus on vulnerable and underserved communities and police/social service partnerships. Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a focus on access to justice. The deadline for interested organizations to submit preliminary applications is September 9, 2022. A limited number of applicants will be selected by the AAA-ICDR Foundation to draft more extensive proposals. Our considered approach to selecting the projects we support is crucial for ensuring that we maximize the impact we can make in communities across the country.
