Welch Foundation Awards Nearly $25 Million in 2017 Research Grants

The Houston-based Welch Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $25 million over three years in support of basic research at colleges and universities in Texas.The foundation awarded thirty-two grants totaling more than $7.5 million to researchers at four institutions in the Houston area Rice University, Texas A&M University, the University of Houston, and Baylor College of Medicine. In addition, twenty-six grants totaling nearly $6.4 million were awarded to researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, while the University of Texas at El Paso and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley each received a single grant of $195,000."Basic chemical research is investigative at its core and the building block of applied research," said Charles W. Tate, chair and director of the Welch Foundation board. "Funding from the Welch Foundation has proven invaluable to the propulsion of research at Texas educational institutions and we look forward to the contributions of this year's grant recipients."
